Together: Ruimte voor collectief wonen

Collectief wonen is aan een opmars bezig in Nederland. Te midden van een ongekende wooncrisis gaan steeds meer mensen over tot collectieve zelforganisatie, zodat ze zelf kunnen voorzien in huisvesting die gemeenschapsgericht, duurzaam en betaalbaar is. Maar waarom komen deze initiatieven zo moeilijk van de grond? En wat kunnen we leren van andere Europese landen?

TOGETHER. Ruimte voor collectief wonen is een verzameling van essays, data en casestudies in Nederland en andere Europese landen, die voortbouwt op het kennisprogramma van Project Together! uit 2021. Het boek behandelt de volgende vragen: wat is de relevantie van collectief wonen, hoe kunnen we deze woonvormen realiseren, en wie kan met welke acties zorgen dat collectief wonen kan bijdragen aan duurzamere steden en regio’s? Het boek illustreert de dilemma’s en kansen voor een nieuw paradigma, over hoe we in de 21ste eeuw samen kunnen leven.

Commons in Design

The scarcity of resources, climate change, and the digitalization of everyday life are fuelling the economy of swapping, sharing, and lending—all of which are in some way linked to a culture of commoning. In this context, we understand commons as community-based processes that use, collectively manage, and organize generally accessible resources—referring to both goods and knowledge. 
Commons in Design explores the meaning and impact of commons—especially knowledge-based peer commons—and acts of commoning in design. It discusses networked, participatory, and open procedures based on the commons and commoning, testing models that negotiate the use of commons within design processes. In doing so, it critically engages with questions regarding designers’ positionings, everyday practices, self-understandings, ways of working, and approaches to education.

The governance of natural resources used by many individuals in common is an issue of increasing concern to policy analysts. Both state control and privatization of resources have been advocated, but neither the state nor the market have been uniformly successful in solving common pool resource problems. After critiquing the foundations of policy analysis as applied to natural resources, Elinor Ostrom here provides a unique body of empirical data to explore conditions under which common pool resource problems have been satisfactorily or unsatisfactorily solved. Dr Ostrom uses institutional analysis to explore different ways - both successful and unsuccessful - of governing the commons. In contrast to the proposition of the 'tragedy of the commons' argument, common pool problems sometimes are solved by voluntary organizations rather than by a coercive state. Among the cases considered are communal tenure in meadows and forests, irrigation communities and other water rights, and fisheries.

De economische crisis, de pandemie en de klimaatcatastrofe hebben een deuk geslagen in ons (neoliberale) zelfbeeld als autonome individuen. Overal klinkt de roep om meer ‘gemeenschapszin’. Maar wat verbindt ons eigenlijk? Die vraag wordt meestal beantwoord in termen van ‘normen en waarden’ of ‘nationale identiteit’, en tegenwoordig zelfs onomwonden in termen van etniciteit of ras.
Geïnspireerd door een breed scala aan kritische denkers, vindt Thijs Lijster een alternatief in de traditie van het denken over de zogenaamde commons, of meenten.
